The Gonads
The gonads produce hormones as well as
reproductive cells.
Ovarian hormones:
| Estrogen is produced by developing
follicles. It causes the signs of heat and prepares the female
reproductive tract for breeding and the onset of pregnancy.
|
| Progesterone is produced by the corpus
luteum which develops from the empty follicle after ovulation. It
is necessary for pregnancy to be maintained. |
Testicular hormones:
| Testosterone is responsible for male
secondary sex characteristics.
|
| Estrogen is produced in very small
amount in the testes. Its role is unclear. |
