The Large Intestine
The large intestine is the last part of the
digestive tube. It receives material from the small intestine and
extracts the last remaining useful substances from it.
The cecum is a blind ended sac. In
carnivores it is small, but in monogastric herbivores, such as the
horse, it can be quite large. It acts as an important part of a
horse's microbial fermentation chamber.
The colon is the longest part of the
large intestine.
The rectum is the final segment of
the large intestine. From here the contents move out through the anus
during defecation.
