The Reproductive
System
Most systems in the body help ensure the survival
of the individual animal. The reproductive system helps ensure the
survival of the species the animal belongs to. The reproductive
system influences other body systems, but it is not essential to the
life of the animal.
The reproductive cells are produced by the process
of meiosis.
The male
reproductive system develops the male
"germ cells" and transmits them to the female.
The female
reproductive system develops the female
"germ cells" and allows the union of the male and female germ cells
and development and delivery of the offspring.
Fertilization and
pregnancy occur within the female
reproductive system.
Lactation
is the process of producing the milk which helps support the
offspring in the early postnatal period.
