The Small Intestine
The small intestine gets is so named because
it is significantly smaller in diameter than the large intestine. It
consists of 3 segments, and is where the majority of nutrients are
absorbed into the blood and lymph.
The duodenum is the first short
segment of the small intestine. It receives the chyme from the
stomach.
The jejunum is the longest part of
the small intestine. It is lined by millions of tiny finger-like
processes called villi, which increase the surface area of its lining and improve
absorption.
The
ileum is the last, short portion of the
small intestine. It passes material on to the large intestine.
