Nighttime Cycling Equipment, cont.
- All drivers, including cyclists, are required to use lights at night. Most State codes define "night" as half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise. Most do not require bicyclists to use night equipment at other low-light times.
- There is no requirement to have lights on a bicycle at times when their use is not required.
- All States require a white light visible in the front.
- All States require a red light visible from the rear. However, all States but Ohio permit the use of a rear reflector in lieu of a rear light.
- Some States require additional reflectors.
- Newly purchased bicycles equipped with the reflectors required by the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), are not legal to ride at night in any State without the addition of a head light.
- The commercial availability of light emitting diodes (LED) for bicycle lamps has made it much easier and cheaper for bicyclists to have the required lights.
