Experience as an international intern
Over the past few months, I have begun an incredible journey as an intern at the Carrington Research Extension Center, one of the many RECs that NDSU has across the state. My name is Juan Carlos Villeda Guerra. I am 20 years old and am currently studying Agronomy at EARTH University in Costa Rica. As part of our courses at the university, we are required to complete an internship in the last period of our third year, one year before graduation. This experience has been a very important contribution to my personal and professional learning.
On my very first day, I integrated into the team of researchers dedicated to addressing critical issues in agriculture. I have been actively involved in various projects, allowing me to learn about many topics such as crop improvement, soil management, and livestock handling. Working in the seed lab not only helped me apply my theoretical knowledge but also challenged me to think critically and creatively when confronted with real-world problems from the field.
Furthermore, this internship provided me with an invaluable opportunity to connect with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and cultures. Participating in the various agricultural activities and discussing the results in an objective manner enriches my understanding of global approaches to agriculture.
At the conclusion of my internship, I hope to return to Costa Rica with a wealth of knowledge, practical skills, and an expanded professional network. I am excited to apply everything I have learned in my final year of study to my projects and tasks, to incorporate innovative solutions that benefit Guatemalan farmers and our industry. This internship has undoubtedly marked a crucial step in my path to becoming an agribusiness professional. I look forward to finishing my studies and being able to dedicate myself my professional pursuits.
