Overview of CREC 2022 Dry Bean Variety Trial Yield

The Carrington Research Extension Center’s 2022 dryland and irrigated trials were planted June 2. Both consisted 31 entries among six market classes (pinto, black, navy, great northern, pink and small red) and included seven NDSU experimental lines. The dryland trial was harvested Sept. 8 and irrigated trial on Sept. 21.

Across all entries, the dryland trial averaged 2075 lbs./acre, with a range of 1480 to 2785 lbs./acre. Among 10 pinto varieties in the trial, greatest yield (LSD [0.05] = 340 lbs./acre) was obtained with Lariat, Monterrey and ND-Falcon, ranging from 2225 to 2530 lbs./acre. Among five black varieties, greatest yield was obtained with Ace, Eclipse and ND-Twilight, ranging from 2065 to 2300 lbs./acre. Among five navy varieties, greatest yield was obtained with Armada, ND-Polar and T9905, ranging from 1945 to 2170 lbs./acre.

Across all entries, the irrigated trial averaged 2970 lbs./acre, with a range of 2040 to 4140 lbs./acre. Among 10 pinto varieties in the trial, greatest yield (LSD [0.05] = 460 lbs./acre) was obtained with Lariat (3470 lbs./acre) and ND-Falcon (3065 lbs./acre). Among five black varieties, greatest yield was obtained with Ace, Black Tails, Eclipse and ND-Twilight, ranging from 2595 to 3045 lbs./acre. Among five navy varieties, greatest yield was obtained with HMS Medalist, ND-Polar and T9905, ranging from 2915 to 3320 lbs./acre.

Averaged across the two trials, pinto varieties yielding greater than 2500 lbs./acre were Lariat (2920 lbs./acre), Monterey (2755 lbs./acre) and ND-Falcon (2645 lbs./acre). Black varieties yielding greater than 2500 lbs./acre were Ace (2670 lbs./acre) and ND-Twilight (2530 lbs./acre). Navy varieties yielding greater than 2500 lbs./acre were ND-Polar (2745 lbs./acre) and T9905 (2515 lbs./acre).
