Professor Mohamed F. R. Khan is the Extension Sugarbeet Specialist for North Dakota State University and the University of Minnesota. He is responsible for developing, conducting and evaluating educational programs that will improve sugarbeet production practices in North Dakota and Minnesota. Dr. Khan research is aimed at improving management of diseases such as Cercospora leaf spot, Rhizoctonia crown and root rot, Sclerotinia, Alternaria, Rhizomania and Fusarium yellows, and agronomic practices such as optimum plant populations, nitrogen management, tillage systems and crop sequences. He does collaborative research on identification of R. solani and sugarbeet physiology with scientists at USDA/ARS facilities in Fargo, ND and Beltsville, MD. He works collaboratively with researchers worldwide on managing C. beticola on sugarbeet.
Dr. Khan is the secretary of the Sugarbeet Research and Education Board of Minnesota and North Dakota (SBREB). The SBREB is responsible for funding and promoting research and educational programs in sugarbeet production. Dr. Khan is also the Chairman of the International Sugarbeet Institute, which organizes an annual two-day trade show. About 2000 growers and allied industry personnel participate in the exposition that involves over 100 exhibitors who showcase more than $10 million worth of machinery and equipment involved in sugarbeet production.
Dr. Khan received his BS from the University of Guyana; MS from the University of Bath, UK; and his Ph.D. from Clemson University, USA. He is also experienced in managing tropical crops including coconut, oil palm and sugar cane.

-Developed, conducted, and evaluated educational programs and research that contributed to a 50% increase of sugarbeet yield in North Dakota and Minnesota.
-Evaluated, determined, and recommended fungicide alternation strategies that growers adopted to successfully manage Cercospora leaf spot.
-Successfully obtained section 18 exemption from the Environmental Protection Agency for the use of tetraconazole on sugarbeet in North Dakota and Minnesota. Template for section 18 requests was used in other sugarbeet producing states to secure section 18 exemption.
-Evaluated and proposed use of Kabina and other seed treatments for managing Rhizoctonia damping-off in sugarbeet; currently used on 100% of sugarbeet acres in Minnesota and North Dakota.
-Developed system to manage Rhizoctonia solani of sugarbeet by applying azoxystrobin fungicide before the average daily soil temperature at the 4 inch depth reached 65ºF.
-Determined that 175 to 200 conventional, and later Roundup Ready sugarbeet plants per 100 feet of 22 inch rows consistently produced the highest recoverable sucrose per acre.

Managed all activities including securing payroll for two Oil Palm Plantations including processing facilities with over 200 employees. Increased production by over 200% by improving agronomic practices and integrating pest control activities, increasing factories’ utilization efficiency, and improving workers’ morale by providing electricity to homes, books and other basic necessities for the school, and sponsored sports and recreational activities in the community.
