Sheila and Robert Challey Institute Scholarship

About

The Sheila and Robert Challey Institute for Global Innovation and Growth provides an avenue for students to learn about the foundations of human progress and the policies and solutions that enhance economic opportunity and human flourishing. This scholarship supports students from any discipline who are interested in these ideas.

Eligibility 

Qualifications for receiving this scholarship include:

  • High School or undergrad GPA of 3.0 or higher
  • An interest in studying economic opportunity and flourishing for individuals and society
  • An interest in pursuing a 9-credit certificate in private enterprise:
    • The certificate includes courses related to: (1) learning about capitalism and socialism, their implications, and the role entrepreneurs can play in improving society; (2) the fundamentals of business; and (3) a seminar workshop with presentations by renowned scholars from across the country.
    • Students must enroll in the BUSN 491 (1-credit) seminar course in their first semester and must continue to show progress toward certificate completion in order to receive the scholarship.

Students may receive this scholarship for up to two years, as long as they reapply each year and are showing progress toward completion of the certificate by meeting all requirements.

Awards

Scholarships will be awarded in the amount of $1,000. Recipients will be selected by a scholarship committee and notified by email. The Sheila and Robert Challey Institute Scholarship is renewable for up to two years, as long as students reapply each year and show progress toward completion of the certificate.

Certificate Requirements

Certificate in Private Enterprise

The 9-credit certificate is open to undergraduate and graduate students of all disciplines at NDSU. To complete the certificate, students need to fulfill the following requirements: 

ECON 205 | Market Values (3 credits)

Fundamental to both business and economics is the creation of value in the marketplace. This course examines competing economic systems (capitalism and socialism) and their ability to create value for society. The course engages modern texts in addition to classical texts from Adam Smith and Karl Marx. The role of entrepreneurs and business persons in contributing to a flourishing society will be emphasized. In addition to in class discussions, lectures and activities, you will be expected to participate in several experiences outside of the classroom.

BUSN 280 or ECON 201 or ECON 202 (3 credits - choose one)

BUSN 280 | Introduction to Business

This course provides an overview of the environment of business, legal forms of business, and the major functional areas of business including management, marketing, accounting, and finance. 

ECON 201 | Principles of Microeconomics

Nature, method, and scope of economic analysis; economic scarcity, resources, specialization of labor; supply-demand analysis; production and cost analysis; product and resource market structures; distribution of income; international trade.

ECON 202 | Principles of Macroeconomics

Aggregate income and employment analysis; business cycles, unemployment, inflation and economic growth; fiscal policy; money and monetary policy; the U.S. economy and the world economy.

BUSN 491/690 | Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop (3 credits - must take three sections)

The Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop invites internationally-renowned scholars from universities across the country to present research and engage in discussion with the NDSU community. This one-credit class meets for one hour per week, alternating between guest speakers and in-class discussions. Students must take three sections of the workshop to fulfill this requirement.
