Comments:

Key to species (known to me) of Veterna

1     Dorsum of abdomen black; distributed in Ethiopia or Arabia

2

-      Dorsum of abdomen pale, at most partly infumed; distributed south of Ethiopia

4

2(1) Very small, length 7.75 mm; humeral angles of pronotum blunt

chewensis Linnavuori

-      Larger species, humeral angles acute (Ethiopia)

3

3(2)  Lenth 9.5-11.0 mm; body rather elongate; anterior part of pronotum pale yellow, base reddish brown; humeral angles sharply triangular; apex of scutellum sharply triangular (Ethiopia, SW Arabia)

abyssinica Lethierry

-       Length 9.0-9.5 mm; body appearing short and broad; pronotum unicolored, golden or whitish, with dense brown puncturing; humeral angles horn-like; scutellum broad (Ethiopia)

alcanor Linnavuori

4(1)  Humeral angles rounded, not all produced aberrans (Germar)
-       Humeral angles angulate to acute, sometimes greatly so 5

5(4)  Small species, length 9-10 mm; color rather uniformly pale ochraceous; puncturing coarse, rugose; scutellum broad (East Africa)

typica (Distant)

-       Larger species; pronotum contrastingly bicolored; scutellum sharply triangular

6

6(5)  Humeral angles elongate, distinctly directed dorsad, when viewed from behind, inclined at a 45 degree angle or greater; base of scutellum with three relatively large pale calloused spots, one in each basal angle, and one medially that continues posteriorly for short distance medially

pugionata (Stål)

-      Humeral angles usually not as elongate, directed more anteriorly and/or laterally, when viewed from behind, inclined at less than a 45 degree angle; pale calloused spots along base of scutellum usually lacking, or very small, indistinct

7

5(4)  Head distinctly tapering apicad, juga therefore narrow apically

mimica Distant

-       Head rather parallel-sided

sanguinirostris (Thunberg)
