Challey Institute to host presentation on education, entrepreneurship and prosperity

John Winters

John Winters, a professor of economics at Iowa State University, is scheduled to present "Regional Human Capital and Higher Education" during the next Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop seminar. The event is slated for Friday, Feb. 21 from 10 to 11 a.m. in the Beckwith Recital Hall. For those who are unable to attend in person, the event will also be held on Zoom.

This event is free and open to all members of the NDSU community and the public. The workshop format includes a 40-minute presentation followed by audience Q&A. After the presentation, light food and refreshments will be served in the Challey School of Music Atrium. 

Winters’ presentation will cover people and their skills, which are critical for regional economic prosperity. In this talk, Winters will summarize his prior and ongoing research on the intersections of education, entrepreneurship and prosperity. Illustrations and implications for the American Heartland will be discussed.

Winters earned a doctorate in economics from Georgia State University and a Bachelor of Arts in economics from Mississippi State University. Winters is a native of Memphis, Tennessee, and grew up in Northwest Mississippi. 

Winters’ research focuses mainly on regional economics and labor economics with specific topics including the migration of college students and graduates, human capital effects on regional economies, individual education outcomes, STEM labor market issues, self-employment outcomes and impacts of economic shocks such as the fracking boom. His research has been published in numerous top field journals. 

Winters is a founding editor of Reaching Regions, an outreach journal for regional science. He also serves on several journal editorial boards.

The Human Progress and Flourishing Workshop invites internationally renowned scholars and speakers from across the country to present research and engage in discussion with the community. The series focuses on solutions and policies that contribute to opportunity, innovation, and individual and societal flourishing.
