Alan Kallmeyer has been named dean of the NDSU College of Engineering following a national search.

Kallmeyer, who was interim dean since December 2022, has been a member of the NDSU community for nearly three decades. He joined the university in 1995 as an assistant professor in the mechanical engineering department and served as chair from 2005 to 2022. He also served as interim dean of the College of Business from 2022 to 2023.

“We look forward to his continued leadership within the college and to a new future for engineering at NDSU,” NDSU Provost David Bertolini said.

Kallmeyer earned his bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Utah and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Iowa. His research focuses on the deformation, fatigue and fracture behavior of engineering materials, including monolithic and composite materials. His work has been supported by the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Air Force, GE Aviation and the Aerospace Testing Alliance.

He currently serves as principal investigator for the $14 million NSF I-Corps Great Plains Hub, a consortium of 11 institutions that provides entrepreneurial training for scientists, researchers and engineers across the Great Plains.

As chair of mechanical engineering, Kallmeyer led efforts that more than doubled enrollment and increased research expenditures by nearly 300 percent. As interim dean of engineering, he has been instrumental in fundraising and design efforts for the new Richard Offerdahl ’65 Engineering Complex, a $100 million construction and renovation project set to open in fall 2026.

Kallmeyer has also remained active in K–12 STEM outreach, helping to inspire the next generation of engineers and scientists.

Bertolini thanked the search committee, led by Kimberly Wallin and John Glover, for their work in reviewing and interviewing a highly qualified pool of candidates. Their efforts, he said, were essential in identifying the next leader of the College of Engineering.
