NDSU’s Bachelor of University Studies program offers the best of both worlds. Tailored to meet the needs of today's students, this innovative program not only offers a personalized pathway to a bachelor's degree but also does so through the convenience of an online platform.
The NDSU degree program provides several options. Students can choose the flexibility and convenience of completely online learning, a traditional campus-based schedule or a mix of online and in-person.
Elise Rue is a senior University Studies student from Fargo. Read below about her journey and experiences within the program.
Why did you make the decision to transfer to NDSU?
When I transferred to NDSU I really had no idea how great of a decision it was. At first, I transferred because, after living back home in Fargo for a semester, I decided I wanted to stay in the area instead of going back to another university. However, staying in the area was not in the cards for me. In the two years since I have transferred, I have lived in Alaska and the Netherlands while still pursuing a degree. Being able to work toward a degree while living elsewhere has made me realize just how great of a decision it was to transfer.
What motivated you to choose the Bachelor of University Studies program as opposed to a traditional major?
The Bachelor of University Studies program gave me the flexibility to live abroad while also working toward a degree from my local university. The program allowed me to tailor my interests and experiences into a degree that fits me and my needs perfectly.
Did you perform part of this degree online? If so, can you talk about that experience?
I have performed this entire degree online. Overall, the experience has been quite smooth. Most of my classes have been asynchronous, which I prefer specifically due to the time difference. All of my professors have been incredibly easy to communicate with and have been quick to help when needed.
How has the program’s flexibility allowed you to tailor your education to your unique interests and goals?
When I first heard about the program, I was intrigued but I did not know what I wanted my degree to be. So I was hesitant if it would be a good fit for me. It worked out in a way that I was able to take classes I was interested in and then from there we were able to group them together into minors for this program. It was convenient that the classes I happened to be interested in were rooted in psychology and international studies. This customization allowed me to not only follow my interests but define what they are.
Share any specific courses or projects that have been particularly impactful or meaningful?
One course that was particularly impactful to me was SOC 441: Death and Dying, taught by Loretta Smith. Talking about death in a non-emotionally charged setting was something new to me and I appreciated Dr. Smith's tact and consideration. She taught a virtual class in a way that was personal and considerate while also being straightforward and informative, which is quite the feat. I believe this course could be beneficial to anyone and I highly recommend it.
In what ways has the Bachelor of University Studies program prepared you for your future career or further academic pursuits?
The program has prepared me by providing invaluable experience alongside tailored courses that seamlessly align themselves into various potential careers or study paths.
What kind of support and guidance have you received from faculty and advisors?
I have received incredible support from NDSU, specifically the BUS Advisor - Jessica Bauer. She has been my biggest advocate for the past two years; without her help I would have never been able to pursue a college degree while also following through with the other experiences I have had. Pursuing a BUS degree online, abroad, feels a bit like a puzzle, but Jessica has pieced it together perfectly, and for that I am extremely grateful.
What advice would you give to prospective students who are considering the Bachelor of University Studies program at NDSU?
I would highly recommend it. The customization of a degree is a great opportunity to make your college experience work for you. For students who feel stuck in the middle of different paths, transfer students trying to graduate on a timeline or students who want to have other experiences in tandem with their pursuit of a college degree, the Bachelor of University Studies program is for you.
