Brady Haussler, an engineer with the North Dakota Department of Transportation and affiliated staff member of NDSU’s Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute, recently received the Young Engineer of the Year Award from Chapter 4 of the N.D. Society of Professional Engineers, which includes professional engineers from southeastern North Dakota, including the Fargo-Moorhead area.

The award recognizes an outstanding engineer for educational and engineering achievements and professional, technical, civic and humanitarian activities.

A registered N.D. professional engineer and a project manager with 13 years of experience, Haussler is supervisor for the Department of Transportation Support Center and the Student Design Center. DOTSC is a part of the Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute at NDSU. SDC is part of the Transportation Technology Research Initiative at the University of North Dakota. The centers work in partnership with NDDOT to help students understand the NDDOT project development process and learn to apply highway design engineering principles to NDDOT projects.

Originally from Rutland, North Dakota, Haussler earned his bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from NDSU and expects to complete a master’s degree in civil engineering from Kennesaw State University in Georgia later this year.

Haussler has worked in consulting, government and academia on projects in North Dakota, Minnesota and Montana, serving in roles such as project management, roadway design, public engagement, consultant support, survey crews, highway and bridge construction, and administration of levee and lift station projects.

Haussler has instructed NDSU civil engineering courses as an adjunct faculty member since 2020. In 2015, 2016 and 2020, projects he participated in were recognized regionally by the Western Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials and nationally by America’s Transportation Awards for positive impacts on quality of life and community development.

In 2020, NDSU Track and Field recognized Haussler for his contributions to student athletes. In 2022, the NDSU College of Engineering’s Student Ambassadors recognized him during Engineer’s Week. In 2023, Haussler coordinated North Dakota’s largest transportation conference with NDSU-UGPTI and NDDOT. An NDSPE member since 2014, Haussler uses his passion to encourage younger minds to consider STEM careers through outreach programs. He is also active with UGPTI’s Transportation Engineering Scholarships and NDSU’s Industry Connections mentorship program.
