NDSU Department of Political Science and Public Policy to host presentation on gender issues and the American legal system

The Department of Political Science and Public Policy is hosting a presentation by Julia J. Ernst, professor of law at the University of North Dakota, entitled “Gender Issues and the Law” as part of the department’s Curtis A. Amlund Lectureship Series.

Ernst will be discussing the intersection between gender issues and the American legal system, including recent U.S. Supreme Court decisions, where these issues stand in the current legal environment, and how they will likely develop in the future.

This event is co-sponsored by the NDSU Pre-Law Club and the NDSU Women and Gender Studies program.

The lecture will take place on Thursday, April 3 at 5 p.m. in the Prairie Rose room of the NDSU Memorial Union.

Ernst joined the University of North Dakota School of Law in July 2011. During the 2024 UND Faculty Investiture Ceremony, she was honored to be invested as the Floyd B. Sperry Professor of Law. From 2019-2023, she also served as an associate dean at the UND School of Law. She received her Bachelor of Arts from Yale University, and Master of Arts and Juris Doctor from the University of Michigan Law School. She also received her Master of Laws from Georgetown University Law Center. She is currently a member of the Executive Committee of the Women Lawyers Section of the State Bar Association of North Dakota.

Curtis A. Amlund was a professor of political science at NDSU from 1961-1998, when he transitioned to professor emeritus. He served in the U.S. Army from 1948-1952 and obtained his Bachelor of Arts and doctorate from the University of Minnesota in 1952 and 1959. Curtis passed away in 2005 and the Curtis A. Amlund Lectureship Series was established in his honor.
