NDSU hosts Nobel at Noon

NDSU’s Challey Institute is scheduled to host Nobel at Noon, a free event celebrating the groundbreaking discoveries recognized by the 2024 Nobel Prizes. The event is slated for Thursday, Jan. 23, from noon to 1 p.m. in Louise Auditorium at Barry Hall, with lunch provided for all attendees.

This engaging lunchtime presentation features esteemed NDSU faculty members offering insights into the significant scientific and social breakthroughs honored by the Nobel Prizes. The event includes brief presentations by faculty experts, followed by a question-and-answer session where attendees can delve deeper into the implications of these achievements.

Moderator

John Bitzan, Menard Family Director of the Challey Institute, will guide the discussions.

Presentations by NDSU Faculty

Julia Bowsher, professor and chair of biological sciences
Discussing the Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to Victor Ambros and Gary Ruvkun for their discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation.

Chris Colbert, professor of biochemistry
Highlighting the Nobel Prize in Chemistry awarded to David Baker for computational protein design, as well as Demis Hassabis and John Jumper for advancements in protein structure prediction.

Alan Denton, professor of physics:
Exploring the Nobel Prize in Physics awarded to John Hopfield and Geoffrey Hinton for foundational discoveries in machine learning and artificial neural networks.

Elizabeth Carlson, associate professor of political science and Challey Institute Scholar:
Analyzing the Sveriges Riksbank Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences awarded to Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson, and James A. Robinson for their work on the formation of institutions and their impact on prosperity.
