The NDSU chapter of Golden Key International Honour Society will participate in “Read for the Record” Thursday, Oct. 3. “Read for the Record” is a nationwide attempt to break a world record by reading the same book to as many kids as possible on the same day.

At the NDSU chapter’s event, Golden Key members, honorary members and others will read “Otis,” by Loren Long, in the Herberger’s Court of West Acres Shopping Center from noon to 7 p.m. The book will be read about every 20 minutes.

“Read for the Record” began in 2006, and the project works to promote literacy and education for all children. The NDSU Golden Key chapter has participated in event each year since 2008, while West Acres is participating for the second time.

In 2006, “The Little Engine that Could,” by Watty Piper, was read to 78,791 kids at nationwide events. In 2012, the number grew to nearly 2.4 million children who heard “Ladybug Girl and the Bug Squad,” by David Soman and Jacky Davis. The goal is to read to even more children this year.

The following individuals are among the people scheduled to read during the NDSU Golden Key event:

  • 2 p.m. – Penny Andrist of “Penny and Pals” children entertainment
  • 3 p.m. – Lisa Budeau, “Valley Today” television show anchor
  • 3:30 p.m. – Evie Myers, NDSU vice president for equity, diversity and global outreach
