Charles Okigbo, professor of communication, and Elizabeth Crisp Crawford, assistant professor of communication, contributed a chapter to a recently published book on the strategic uses of communication to address urban health care problems.

“One of the most rewarding parts of finishing the book is providing students and educators with important information about how to educate the public about health issues from a global perspective and from a variety of points of view,” Okigbo said.

The book, “Strategic Urban Health Communication,” includes 17 chapters, with sections on health beliefs and myths, drama for social and behavioral change, communication for cancer prevention, health inequities and advertising in childhood obesity.

In their chapter on strategic communication campaigns, Okigbo and Crawford explain various steps in designing and implementing public communication projects aimed at creating awareness, persuading target audiences, and moving people to specific actions, based on pre-determined objectives.

The book, published by Springer Science and edited by Okigbo, provides a roadmap for understanding strategy and tactics, strategic communication campaigns, and the various uses of communication interventions.

Aimed at professionals and researchers in urban health, global health and health communication, the edited collection has contributions from Canada, China, Bangladesh, India, Japan, Kenya, Thailand and the United States.
