Candidates for dean of libraries to visit campus

Three candidates for the NDSU dean of libraries have been selected for campus visits, according to search committee chair Kent Sandstrom, professor and dean of arts, humanities and social sciences.

Bridget J. Burke, associate university librarian for special collections and the digital library at Boston College, is scheduled to visit NDSU June 18-19. She is scheduled to present at an open forum Thursday, June 19, at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Union Hidatsa room. A short meet and greet will follow.

J.B. Hill, interim dean of Ottenheimer Library at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, is set for a June 23-24 visit.

Barbara J. Mann, associate director for public services at the library of the University of Maryland University College, Adelphi, is scheduled to be on campus July 2-3.

Dates and times of the open forums for Hill and Mann will be announced in the near future.

Burke began working at Boston College in 2011. Previously, she was an assistant professor and department head for the Alaska and Polar Regions Collection at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks. She also has held positions at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia; American Alpine Club, Golden, Colorado; Colorado Historical Society, Denver; Sterling Library at Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut; National Museum of American History Library at the Smithsonian Institution; and the New York Public Library.

Burke earned her bachelor’s degree and Master of Library Science at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a master’s degree in American history at Wesleyan University.

Hill has been at the University of Arkansas, Little Rock, since 2009. Prior to that, he was associate dean for public services at Indiana University Bloomington and head of reference at Southeastern Louisiana University, Hammond.

Hill earned his bachelor’s degree at Auburn University, a Master of Library Science at Vanderbilt University and a master’s degree in economics from Mankato State University.

Mann has been at University of Maryland University College since 2006. She previously was the coordinator for the information literacy program at the university libraries of the University of Southern Maine, Portland. She also held positions at Robert W. Woodruff Library at Emory University, Atlanta.

Mann earned her bachelor’s degree at the University Montevallo, Alabama, and a Master of Library and Information Science from the University of South Carolina.

The dean of libraries, who reports directly to the Provost, is responsible for providing leadership of the NDSU Libraries, including personnel management; oversight of programs and services; budget preparation; increasing federal, state, and private support for the NDSU Libraries; and advocating for the libraries regionally and nationally.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation's top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
