The NDSU Department of Human Development and Family Science is scheduled to host “Promoting Positive Youth Development: Implications of the 4-H Study for Theory, Research and Application,” a presentation by renowned researcher Richard Lerner, director of the Institute for Applied Research in Youth Development at Tufts University. The talk is part of the department’s annual Gertrude Weigum Hinsz Lecture Series.

The lecture is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 3, at 3:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Century Theater.

The positive youth development perspective is a strength-based model of development that seeks to understand and enhance the lives of diverse adolescents. Lerner will present findings from the 4-H study of positive youth development, as well as from other studies conducted by Tufts University researchers. The findings will show healthy development occurs when the strengths of young people are aligned with existing resources in families, schools and communities.

This presentation is highly recommended for anyone who is parenting children or interested in youth development,” said Melissa O’Connor, assistant professor of human development and family science. “It will show that adolescence is not just a period of angst and stress, but a time of positive growth and resilience.”

A reception with treats and beverages will follow the presentation in the Memorial Union Hidatsa room.

Continuing Education credits are available.
