The chair of the Fashion Institute of Technology-SUNY’s fashion design department is scheduled to speak at NDSU as part of the university’s eighth annual Distinguished Alumni Award Program.
Eileen Karp, BS `75, textiles and clothing, is the College of Human Development and Education 2014 distinguished alumna. She is slated to return to campus and discuss her career journey on Friday, Nov. 7, at 11 a.m. in the Family Life Center room 122.
Sponsored by each of the colleges at NDSU, the Distinguished Alumni Award Program recognizes the accomplishments of outstanding alumni. It also presents an opportunity to educate students by introducing them to successful alumni in their respective fields of study.
Karp has more than 30 years of experience in creative design, patternmaking and technical design combined with more than 25 years in education. Her fashion design career began as a creative designer of loungewear and sportswear. Her maternity line designs were sold to companies such as Bloomingdale’s and Saks Fifth Avenue.
In 2009, Karp developed and launched a new interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science program in technical design at Fashion Institute of Technology-SUNY. In January, Karp became chair of the fashion design department where she teaches design courses in draping, patternmaking, construction, technical applications, sportswear, digital apparel management and related topics.
During the program, distinguished alumni share career-related experiences and knowledge while visiting campus. Each alumnus has an opportunity to make presentations to students, faculty, alumni and the NDSU community. All classroom presentations and seminars are free and open to the public.
