A team of NDSU student commodity traders participated in the 2015 Chicago Mercantile Exchange Trading Challenge.

The challenge consists of teams across the world trading various commodities. In the competition, 502 teams from 37 nations consisting of more than 2,000 undergraduate and graduate students competed in two different rounds of trading. The preliminary round grants students access to the powerful platform of CQG and a $100,000 balance for a total of two weeks.

The final round gives the top 10 percent of teams a balance of $250,000 and another two weeks of trading.

The NDSU trading team placed 11th in the preliminary round by creating 60 percent profit in two weeks. The team then placed 10th in the final round by ending with a final balance of $363,877.

Members include Brady Richter, Aaron Vipond, Aaron Remick and Lucas Schaaf. William Wilson, University Distinguished Professor of agribusiness and applied economics, was the team’s adviser.

The NDSU trading team was invited to the Chicago Mercantile Exchange Group Day of Market Education in Chicago. The team attended various conferences on trading techniques and technology, and networked with colleagues around the world. The NDSU trading team also was able to tour exclusive areas in commodity trading.
