Theresa Semmens, chief information security officer at NDSU, has been elected to serve a two-year term on the first board of the Research and Education Networking Information Sharing and Analysis Center, commonly known as REN-ISAC.

The center promotes and supports cyber security protection and response efforts within research and higher education. It plays an integral role in higher education strategies to improve cyber security through information collection, analysis, dissemination, early warning and response.

NDSU is one of 429 member institutions, which include colleges and universities, teaching hospitals, research and education network providers, and government-funded research organizations from the United States, Canada and New Zealand. Within the community of participating institutions, members share sensitive information about cyber security threats, incidents, responses and protection strategies.

Semmens is one of seven information security professionals elected to serve on the board. Since 2003, she has been responsible for information security at NDSU, providing leadership, guidance and advocacy for security policies, procedures and implementation at the university. In addition, she recently was appointed to serve as the director of NDSU Records Management.

Semmens has a bachelor’s degree in computer information systems and master’s degrees in management and in business administration. She has been a certified information systems auditor since 2003 and a member of the Educause Security Task Force Effective Practices Working Group since 2004.

As a student-focused, land-grant, research university, we serve our citizens.
