Hanukkah begins this year at sundown on Sunday, Dec. 21. We often include a public recognition of this holiday when we offer “Season's Greetings” or “Happy Holidays” at this time of year. But, how much do you really know about Hanukkah? A panel discussion about the Jewish tradition of Hanukkah is scheduled Thursday, Dec. 11, at noon in the Memorial Union Gallery.
The festival of Hanukkah (also spelled Chanukah) was established to commemorate the Jewish Maccabees' military victory over the Greek-Syrians and the rededication of the Second Temple, which had been desecrated by the Greek-Syrians, to the worship of God. Thus, Hanukkah is a celebration of Jewish national survival and religious freedom.
Panelists include Rabbi Janeen Kobrinsky from Temple Beth El; Wendy Troop Gordon, assistant professor of psychology; and Abby Gold from NDSU Extension Service's food and nutrition.
