David Wells, professor of industrial and manufacturing engineering, was a key participant in the Society of Manufacturing Engineers’ “Manufacturing Education Leadership Forum” held Nov. 13-15 at the Farmingdale campus of the State University of New York.

Wells was the moderator for three plenary sessions on the subjects of the context and scope of manufacturing engineering education for the 21st century, energy manufacturing and globalization. He also co-chaired three working sessions on the topics of graduate education in manufacturing, product engineering and the redefinition of manufacturing engineering and technology education.

Wells was appointed to the scientific committee for the “Manufacturing Education Global Transformation Summit” scheduled for June 2009 at the University of Texas-Austin.

At the leadership forum, 57 delegates examined needs for fundamental knowledge in nano-manufacturing and critical issues relative to production of consumer and industrial products in biomedical, electronic and energy industries.

The Society of Manufacturing Engineers is the primary professional organization for engineers, technologists and managers engaged in manufacturing science and operations. The group has headquarters in Dearborn, Mich.
