Denver Tolliver, director of NDSU’s Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute, presented on best practices for working with Native Americans on transportation research, workforce development and education programs Tuesday, June 2, at the summer meeting of the Council of University Transportation Centers at Rutgers University in New Jersey.
Tolliver was invited by U.S. Department of Transportation program administrators to be part of a panel to discuss minority-serving institution involvement. Tolliver described collaborative efforts between NDSU tribal colleges, tribal governments and Tribal Technical Assistance Programs that help tribal governments with technical issues and planning related to transportation. The Upper Great Plains Transportation Institute is the lead university in the Mountain-Plains Consortium, a consortium of eight universities that successfully competed for funding from the U.S. Department of Transportation as part of its University Transportation Centers program. The universities, located in Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Wyoming and Utah work collaboratively with tribal colleges and tribal governments in the region. Tolliver is director of the consortium.
