The National Council on Family Relations (NCFR) has named Christi McGeorge, professor of human development and family science, as the 2015 recipient of the Kathleen Briggs Outstanding Mentor Award. The honor recognizes an outstanding mentor of students and new professionals in the area of marriage and family therapy.

McGeorge will be recognized at the group's annual conference, scheduled for Nov. 11-14 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

"I am humbled and honored by the nominations from my former students," McGeorge said. "To be honored for doing something I love – working with students and mentoring – is just incredible. Dr. Briggs was a dear mentor to me at a time when there were not many woman faculty members in family therapy and to receive this award in her name is one of the greatest professional honors I could ever receive."

McGeorge, a NCFR member since 1994, has been a faculty member in the NDSU Department of Human Development and Family Science since 2003.

“Dr. McGeorge exemplifies what is right with education and mentorship today,” writes Candice A. Maier, a former student and NDSU alumna. “She is engaging in ways that help even the most reluctant and resistant learners become focused and involved in their individual career paths.”

McGeorge is past chair for the organization's Family Therapy Section and an elected member of the organization's Inclusion and Diversity Committee. She also is an active member of the NCFR GLBTSA Focus Group and the Feminism and Family Studies Section. Her research has focused on the influence of heterosexism and homophobia on clinical practice and training, gender equity in therapy, gender equity in higher education, feminist theories and societal perceptions of single parents.

The National Council on Family Relations has a membership of more than 3,000 family researchers, practitioners and educators.
