Science Café to explore computers impact on drug development

NDSU's next Science Café will examine how new computer technology quickens the discovery and testing of new medications to prevent disease.

Farukh Jabeen, a post-doctoral research fellow in the NDSU Center for Computationally Assisted Science and Technology, is scheduled to present "Fast forward: How computers speed up drug innovation" Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. in Stoker’s Basement at the Hotel Donaldson, 101 N. Broadway, Fargo.

According to Jabeen, discovering a new medication and getting it to market can take up to 20 years and cost billions of dollars. But, she'll discuss how advances in computer technology speeds up the drug development process and gets new medications into the hands of patients sooner.

Jabeen joined NDSU in 2014. She earned her doctorate in organic and computational chemistry at Quaid-i-Azam University, Islamabad, Pakistan, and previously was an adjunct research associate at the University of Florida.

Science Café is sponsored by the NDSU College of Science and Mathematics. Attendees younger than age 21 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. The event is free and open to the public.
