Maria-Claudia Tomany, vice provost at St. Xavier University, Chicago, has been named dean of the NDSU College of Graduate and Interdisciplinary Studies. Provost Beth Ingram made the announcement March 11.
Tomany begins her new duties on May 15.
"Dr. Tomany brings with her a strong research record, extensive administrative experience and a collaborative leadership style," said Provost Ingram. "I'm delighted that she has agreed to join NDSU to lead our efforts to support and expand graduate education on campus."
Tomany was the academic leader and executive campus director for the planned Gilbert, Arizona, campus of St. Xavier University. She previously was associate vice president for academic affairs and dean of graduate studies at Western State Colorado University, Gunnison, Colorado. Prior to that, Tomany was assistant vice president for undergraduate studies and international education at Minnesota State University, Mankato.
Her scholarly interests focus on medieval and early modern culture of Northern Europe. Her vita lists four book projects; seven articles, book chapters and contributions; four reviews; and four novel translations. Tomany has given 23 conference presentations and 10 invited lectures.
She earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Bergen, Norway; her master's degree and doctorate in English and Scandinavian studies at the University of Munich, Germany.
