More than 100 area high school students will get the chance to participate in hands-on activities from various scientific fields. NDSU graduate students are set to host the second annual Avenues of Scientific Discovery on April 7 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Plains room.
Graduate students will guide attendees through experiments and other real-world experiences. Activities include strawberry DNA extraction, liquid nitrogen experiments, pond water microorganism observation and learning how diseases spread.
The graduate student-led event creates a fun and safe environment for area students to learn about core science concepts from a number of different disciplines. Participating graduate programs include:

· Biology
· Chemistry and biochemistry
· Coatings and polymeric materials
· Engineering
· Entomology
· Pharmacy
· Physics
· Plant science
· Public health
· Veterinary and microbiological sciences
“Our goal is to use the innovative research being conducted at NDSU to achieve an interactive science experience for area youth,” said event coordinator Elliott Welker, genomics and bioinformatics doctoral student.
