NDSU sophomore Lacey Dickerman, a microbiology major, has been selected to receive a Council on Undergraduate Research Biology Travel Award.

Dickerman was acknowledged for her abstract submitted to the Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology. Her research focuses on the role of yolk melatonin and receptor signaling on embryo development in chicken eggs. She is scheduled to give a presentation on her work at the society’s national meeting in New Orleans in January. The award will help pay for her travel costs.

“I wish to congratulate you and your student. The organization knows how important undergraduate research is to the development of students,” wrote Karen Resendes in a letter to Wendy Reed, NDSU chair and head of biological sciences. Resendes is the Biology Travel Awards Committee chair and a faculty member at Westminster College, Pennsylvania.

“Lacey is working with Nicole Snyder, one of my graduate students. I am really proud of Lacey and the work she has done in our lab. She is highly motivated, dedicated and engaged in research,” Reed said, noting the award recognizes Dickerman’s accomplishments as well as commitment to research.

“I am very honored and grateful to have received this award," said Dickerman, who is from Hankinson, North Dakota. “Research is extremely rewarding, it allows you to always be learning something new, and learn how to balance independence and collaboration.”

The Council on Undergraduate Research and affiliated colleges and universities provide research opportunities for faculty and students at institutions serving undergraduate students. Organization members believe faculty members enhance their teaching and contribution to society by remaining active in research and by involving undergraduates in research, and students succeed in their studies and professional advancement through participation in undergraduate research.

As a student-focused, land-grant, research university, we serve our citizens.
