NDSU’s College of Engineering has received approval to offer a minor in biomedical engineering. The program, which was approved by the State Board of Higher Education at its Sept. 29 meeting, will be administered through the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering.
The program, which will begin in January, will build on the strength of current faculty in the areas of biomedical engineering and biomechanics. It will be open to students in a variety of engineering disciplines, including mechanical, industrial, manufacturing, computer and electrical engineering.
“The minor in biomedical engineering meets a need identified by our alumni in the biomedical industry and desired by our students. The strong design capabilities we have in our engineering programs, coupled with a minor in biomedical, helps prepare students for one of the fastest growing segments in engineering,” said Gary Smith, dean of engineering. “We envision students being able to more effectively engage with biomedical companies for internships and ultimately as employees.”
The program’s goals are to:
• Meet the needs of undergraduate engineering students interested in biomedical engineering careers.
• Educate and train students through courses and undergraduate research focused on biomedical issues and device development.
Students are required to take at least 21 credits, at least 12 of which must be in addition to the credits applied to their major.
