A total of 26 craft maltsters and brewers, along with malting and industry specialists, came to NDSU to learn at two courses taught at the Northern Crops Institute in October. Course participants traveled from California, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon and Virginia to attend.
The Barley and Malt Quality Short Course, held Oct. 3-6, was coordinated by Paul Schwarz, professor of plant sciences, and included seven other instructors from industry, academia and government. Organizers were the Institute of Barley and Malt Sciences at NDSU, NCI and the Master Brewers Association of the Americas. Northern Crops Institute has offered the course on a semi-annual basis for the past 33 years.
Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) and Preventive Control Qualified Individual Training, held Oct. 6-7, was taught by Robert Maddock, associate professor of animal sciences. Program organizers included NDSU and the North American Craft Maltsters Guild.
