The NDSU Office of Multicultural Programs is set to host a performance by the Odissi Dance Company, scheduled for Sunday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in Beckwith Recital Hall. The free event is open to the public and is being held in honor of Asian Pacific Islands Heritage Month.
Odissi is India’s oldest classical dance form that originated in the Orissa temples at Puri, Konarak and Bhubaneswar in eastern India. The dance is coupled with Odiya music and a percussion instrument called a mardala. The dances create a visual and memorable performance through body bends and hand movements using symmetrical patterns of rectangles, squares and circles.
