Xuefeng (Michael) Chu, associate professor, has been named interim chair of the NDSU Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. His duties began Sept. 1.
“Dr. Chu has established an impressive record of research, teaching and service to the College of Engineering,” said Michael Kessler, dean of engineering. “I am very pleased he has agreed to take on this important responsibility, as the department’s continued success is essential for the growth and vitality of the college.”
Chu joined NDSU in 2008. He earned his doctorate from the University of California, Davis.
Chu was elected a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers’ Environmental and Water Resources Institute in 2017. He received the society’s associate editor award in 2015.
Chu is a member of the American Geophysical Union, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Water Resources Association, International Association of Hydrological Sciences and the Chinese American Water Resources Association. He also is associate editor of the Journal of Hydrologic Engineering.
His research interests include watershed hydrologic and environmental modeling; overland flow and infiltration; integrated modeling of flow and multi-phase contaminant transport in surface and subsurface environments; non-point source pollution and environmental assessment; and groundwater modeling and management.
A national search will be conducted for a permanent chair.
