In honor of Black History Month, a special event, “Afrique: A Trip to the Motherland,” is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 23, from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. in the Memorial Union Great Ballroom. Entry is free.
The event features a variety of performances by students, including musical and spoken word pieces. The audience also will see paintings and a fashion show. The showcase is sponsored by NDSU’s Black Collegiate Women and the Black Student Association.
“Our program is a celebration of African culture colliding with the American experience. Throughout the ages in the United States, Africans have been stripped of our dignity and culture,” said Edwina Opara, a junior majoring in psychology, who is president of Black Collegiate Women. “This showcase will be a resurgence and a connection back to a culture we may have lost.”
Black Student Association president Michael Samuel, a junior marketing major said, “This program brings out the African heritage in the Fargo-Moorhead community. It outlines the importance of the African culture, and the perseverance our ancestors had. We will showcase important African figures, along with showcasing the amazing talent we have here.”
