NDSU Advance FORWARD has is sponsoring the visit of Virginia Valian, Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Linguistics at Hunter College and the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and author of the book "Why So Slow? The Advancement of Women." The NDSU Community is invited to attend Valian's lectures on gender and institutional change on Sept. 25.

Valian will present “Addressing Gender Equity” at 9 a.m. in the Memorial Union Century Theater. She will discuss why so few women are at the top of their profession in academia. She will review experimental data that demonstrate how gender schemas (held by men and women alike) produce subtle overvaluations of men and undervaluations of women.

A presentation titled "Analyzing and Correcting Visible (and Hidden) Gender Equity Problems," is planned for 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Memorial Union Plains room. A free lunch will be served and registration is required.

Faculty members are invited to a workshop titled "Individual Action for Gender Equity" at 2:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Hidatsa room. Refreshments will be served and registration is required.

Women faculty are invited to a lecture titled "Power, Effectiveness and Gender" at 4 p.m. in the Memorial Union Hidatsa room. Registration is required.

To register, go to

ndsuadvance.ndsu.nodak.edu/registration.

The registration deadline is Monday, Sept. 21.
