Andrej Svyantek, an NDSU doctoral student in the Department of Plant Sciences, won first place in the Viticulture category of the graduate student poster competition at the 2018 American Society for Enology and Viticulture-Eastern Section meeting held July 9-11 in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania.
The research presented in his poster, ”Early Season Leaf Removal Reduces Cluster Compactness and Yield in North Dakota Marquette,“examined how fruit zone leaf removal timing and severity affects yield, cluster size and fruit quality in the Marquette red wine grape. Preliminary results of this ongoing study indicate grape growers in eastern North Dakota may effectively manage yield while improving fruit quality through implementation of trace-bloom leaf removal and fruit-set leaf removal.
Svyantek is from Auburn, Alabama. His graduate program adviser is Harlene Hatterman-Valenti, professor and high value crop production project leader in the Department of Plant Sciences. Members of the high value crop production team who contributed to this research project are John Stenger, Collin Auwarter, Nickolas Theisen, Razi Ibrahim and Hatterman-Valenti.
