An interview with Bruce Maylath, professor of English, was featured on Dansk Radio (Danish Radio) on June 24. Airing on the weekly program Sproglaboratoriet (The Language Laboratory), the interview highlighted the Scandinavian influences on the American English spoken in the Upper Midwest of the United States.
Program host Sarah O’Neill von Essen traveled to Fargo to interview Maylath on June 2 at the Sons of Norway Lodge in downtown Fargo. The interview was conducted in Danish, with Maylath responding in Norwegian (which, because of the languages’ close similarity, the Danish audience can understand).
A podcast of the broadcast can be heard in full at http://www.dr.dk/P1/Sproglaboratoriet/Udsendelser/2010/06/24125901.htm. For those not conversant in Scandinavian languages, von Essen and Maylath recorded the interview earlier in the morning in English at the Prairie Public Radio studios in Fargo, for later broadcasts in our region.
