Program spotlight: Radiologic sciences

SHARE

NDSU’s radiologic sciences program provides a foundation in sciences, math and general education followed by a full-time internship. This structure ensures a well-rounded education that prepares students to succeed in fast-paced medical careers.

After the first two years of general courses, students enroll in a 21- or 24-month, full-time internship within a hospital-based program affiliated with NDSU. Students can choose between three specialized internships in radiography, diagnostic medical sonography or echocardiography.

The internship programs are designed to progressively introduce students to the different modalities available in the profession. By the end of the internship, students are expected to function independently in surgery, procedures, fluoroscopy and general x-ray.

“As students, we need to meet the hospital’s standards because we’re dealing with real-life situations,” said Sam Scattarella, a senior completing his internship at Sanford Health in Fargo. “We have to be able to take instruction during complex surgical procedures, interpret medial orders, and understand anatomy well enough to make judgment calls related to patient safety.”

The internship programs offer small class sizes and the opportunity to build close relationships with instructors and peers. By immersing students into the hospital environment, students are able to work directly with patients and professionals at all levels.

“The education we receive at NDSU and Sanford is exceptional,” Scattarella said. “I’m confident that the experience and knowledge I’ve gained in this program have prepared me to begin my career.”
