Pass/fail option extended for spring semester

The NDSU Faculty Senate Executive committee has approved an extension of the pass/fail grading option for spring semester to May 1. The 16-credit pass/fail limit also will be waived should a student meet or exceed that total.

According to Interim Provost Margaret Fitzgerald, the pass/fail option and extension apply to undergraduate courses only, and students must complete the course to earn a passing grade if they select the pass/fail option.

Students repeating a class this semester from a previous term will need to take the class for a letter grade. The repeated courses policy will continue to apply.

“Students have been asking for this pass/fail option, and student government is very supportive,” Fitzgerald said, noting other universities across the country have adopted a pass/fail option for the semester.

Students will have the option to receive a letter grade or elect to receive a pass/fail grade. Grades of “P” are not calculated into a student’s term or cumulative grade point average, however, grades of “F” are considered failed attempts and will be calculated for both the term and cumulative GPA. Students have until May 1 to submit a pass/fail grade form for one or more of their classes. Forms are available on the Registration and Records website.

Students should consult with their academic advisers or program faculty to determine if a “P” grade will count toward academic progress and graduation requirements in their majors, or if a letter grade is required to progress. Although general education courses typically may not be taken for a pass/fail grade, for this semester, “P” grades will satisfy general education requirements.
