Several events are planned for July 14-16 at NDSU to mark the end of this summer’s North Dakota Governor’s School, a six week-residential program for scholastically motivated state sophomores and juniors.

A band concert and ice cream social is planned for Thursday, July 14, at 7:30 p.m. in Festival Concert Hall. The band is made up of some Governor’s School students, and the concert is free and open to the public.

Governor’s School students will give science presentations Friday, July 15, at 8:30 a.m. in Sudro room 26. They will outline the research they conducted in their chosen area of either biology, biochemistry, chemistry, materials science, pharmacy or physics. A science poster session will follow at 2:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom.

Students also will have a reception featuring fine arts presentations July 15, starting at 6:30 p.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom. Students worked in various mediums, including printmaking, drawing, sculpting and visual graphics.

The Governor’s School closing ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, July 16, at 10 a.m. in the Memorial Union Ballroom. During the ceremony, Governor’s School coordinators and students will talk about their experiences and completion certificates will be presented.

“The closing ceremony is a venue for the students to showcase the amazing work they have done during their six weeks on campus and a chance for the program to celebrate our students’ achievements,” said Kelly Gorz, academic special events coordinator for the Center for Science and Math Education.

This summer’s Governor’s School began June 5 with 66 North Dakota high school students arriving on campus. Since then, students have learned directly from NDSU faculty in areas such as laboratory science, mathematics, information technology, English studies and visual arts (visual arts alternates with performing arts each year). They also have participated in 4-H life and leadership classes and enjoyed a field trip to Minneapolis, a canoe trip and service projects.
