NDSU has received approval to offer several new programs, including a minor in cultural diversity, a Bachelor of Science in supply chain management and certificates in business analytics, professional ethics and professional writing.
The programs were approved by the State Board of Higher Education Academic and Student Affairs Committee during its Jan. 18 meeting.
“NDSU is responding to student and labor market demand and guidance from our advisory boards to launch new opportunities,” said Provost Margaret Fitzgerald. "Employers want to hire people who will thrive in a multicultural workplace, have strong professional ethics and write well. Moreover, there are robust job opportunities for people with skills in business analytics and supply chain management.”
The 18-credit cultural diversity minor offered by the Department of Sociology and Anthropology is designed to prepare students to succeed in a multicultural society and workplace. The program will Increase students’ understanding of historic and contemporary issues. A variety of courses will examine diversity in American society and around the world.
The major in supply chain management is a 120-credit degree program in the College of Business. Administered by the Department of Transportation, Logistics and Finance, the program is modeled after the Gartner Supply Chain Talent Attribute Model. The major includes 39 credits of required courses, plus nine credits of supply chain electives so students learn about different components of the supply chain field.
The undergraduate certificate in business analytics will cover key areas in business data analytics, which has been growing dramatically and has become an essential function in many business organizations. The program will increase students’ marketability in the workforce. To earn the certificate, students are required to complete five courses offered by the Department of Transportation, Logistics and Finance; Department of Accounting and Information Systems; and the Department of Marketing and Management in the College of Business.
The professional ethics undergraduate certificate provides students with a strong education that they can use in their future careers and private lives. Students develop critical reasoning and creative thinking skills as they explore the basis for moral codes and thinking, how to evaluate evidence and build arguments, and learn about ethical issues arising both in general and in their future profession. The certificate will be offered by the Department of History, Philosophy and Religious Studies.
The English department will offer undergraduate and graduate certificates in professional writing. Course requirements for the certificates in professional writing will build upon the existing curriculum, most of which is accessible to all disciplines. The undergraduate program requires nine credit hours of coursework. The graduate program requires eight-to-nine credit hours of coursework.
The new programs are scheduled to start during the 2022-2023 academic year.
