NDSU Visual Arts Associate Professor David Swenson and his students will be loading the NDSU wood kiln on Monday, Oct. 1, at 2:30 p.m. at Renaissance Hall, 650 NP Ave., in preparation for its inaugural firing.

The intention of the NDSU wood kiln is to create an opportunity for learning in a non-traditional classroom setting where goals are accomplished through a communal effort. Its design, by Swenson and visual arts technician Dan Siverson, construction and process revolve around this intention. Swenson and his students have spent the last several years planning and constructing the kiln, which will be fired during NDSU Homecoming, October 1-6.

Artists from throughout the region have been invited to contribute their works for the firing, free of charge.

Loading will begin October 1. The fire will be lighted at 5 p.m. on October 3 and extinguished beginning October 7. The NDSU wood kiln inaugural firing is part of the Fargo-Moorhead Visual Artist’s Studio Crawl, October 6-7.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation's top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
