Communication professor edits book on editing

Ross Collins, professor of communication, recently edited the book, “Editing Across Media: Content and Process for Print and Online Publication.”

The book contains chapters written by authors from across the country with a combined two centuries of teaching and professional editing experience. A former NDSU Spectrum editor co-wrote one of the chapters on social media and editing.

Collins wanted the finished book to cover the kinds of editing students would be doing in a variety of publications such as newspapers, public relations, advertising, magazines or social media.

“I thought we needed a textbook that covers this wide spectrum for beginning editors. I also wanted to add a little fun stuff because editing texts have a reputation for being dull. Perhaps deservedly so, I think,” Collins said.

It is Collins’ fifth written or edited book.

NDSU is recognized as one of the nation's top 108 public and private universities by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education.
