NDSU professor to reveal the artistry behind conducting music

SHARE

Jo Ann Miller, University Distinguished Professor of music, has spent years bringing to life the meaning and beauty of a piece of music. As a conductor, she must communicate her understanding and passion for the music to a choir and, ultimately, the audience.

Miller, with the assistance of the NDSU Concert Choir, will demonstrate how the artistry of a conductor is the ultimate collaborative experience in “The Conductor’s Art,” a presentation scheduled for Tuesday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. at the Reineke Fine Arts Center's Beckwith Recital Hall, 12th Ave. N. and Bolley Dr.

The presentation coincides with Miller receiving the 53rd Faculty Lectureship Award. Considered one of the most prestigious of NDSU’s awards, the lectureship recognizes sustained professional excellence in teaching, scholarly and creative achievement, and service.

Miller is the artistic director of the NDSU Baroque Festival and the chorus master of the Fargo-Moorhead Symphony Orchestra. She has earned a number of awards for her performances and teaching. Among them are the Gold Medal at the Zadar International Choral Festival in Croatia in 2012, North Dakota Outstanding Choral Director award in 2004, and the Distinguished Educator Award given by the NDSU Blue Key Fraternity in 1998.

The lecture is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in the atrium outside Beckwith Recital Hall.
