Erika Beseler Thompson, assistant director for alcohol and other drug abuse prevention, Thomas Hall, associate professor of education, and Myron Eighmy, professor of education, recently published a peer-reviewed article in The Journal of College and University Student Housing.
The article, titled “Parental Notification of Alcohol or Drug Related Violations: Parents’ Perceptions and Reactions to the Practice,” examined the responses of parents to being notified of alcohol or drug-related violations involving college and university students under the age of 21.
Results indicated parental notification served as a catalyst for parents to engage their students in discussion of the consequences of alcohol or drug use-related decisions. The study also found that parental notification policies can be an effective tool to encourage parental intervention in cases involving underage student violations of alcohol or other drug policies.
The article appears in Volume 20, Issue 2 of the journal.
