The 40th annual Harvest Bowl, scheduled for Nov. 8-9, will recognize internationally renowned wheat breeder Richard Frohberg with the prestigious Agribusiness Award.
The Harvest Bowl dinner and awards celebration is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8, starting with a social and games at 6 p.m. in the Crystal Ballroom of the Ramada Plaza and Suites, Fargo.
Harvest Bowl activities continue Saturday, Nov. 9, as the Bison football team plays Illinois State University at 2:30 p.m. in the Fargodome.
The yearly event recognizes agriculturalists from across North Dakota and western Minnesota, as it celebrates agriculture, education and Bison athletics.
Frohberg had a major impact on agriculture in North Dakota and around the globe. He was the principal investigator of NDSU’s hard red spring wheat breeding program from 1966 until his retirement in 2002. During his tenure, 25 varieties were released, a level of success few can match. Frohberg also contributed to the development of nine varieties released after his retirement.
His long, productive research career advanced the state economically, and also benefitted humanity. Frohberg released varieties that were in great demand by wheat producers in North Dakota and the region, and met the requirements of the baking and milling industries throughout the world. His free exchange of germplasm directly helped producers and breeding programs worldwide, which continue to provide nourishment for millions of people. In addition, varieties that will be released by NDSU during the next decade will be from material Frohberg developed.
A professor emeritus at NDSU, Frohberg earned his bachelor’s degree at Kansas State University and his master’s degree and doctorate from Iowa State University. He and his wife, Norma, have three grown children and nine grandchildren.
During the past 39 years, Harvest Bowl has recognized more than 2,500 area agriculturists and awarded more than $125,000 in scholarships to NDSU students who are studying agriculture, business or pre-med and come from an agricultural background.
