Welcome Week ‘makes the college experience better’

NDSU's Welcome Week helps incoming students connect with classmates and campus. Events are scheduled from Saturday, Aug. 19 through Saturday, Sept. 2.

Hundreds of students will move into the residence halls on Saturday, Aug. 19 for move-in day. Welcome Week will begin later in the day and is meant to get students connected through facilitated activities, according toNew Student Programs intern Kacy Schumann.

“Welcome Week is a time and space to meet the other students who are living in that same community and to start developing connections. We provide lots of information about campus so you can be better acquainted and know you belong here,” said Schumann, a senior finance major from Apple Valley, Minnesota. “Lastly, the most fun part of Welcome Week is attending campus events. We host a variety of different events such as a hypnotist, tie-dye and meeting the farm animals.” 

Throughout the week there will be several activities for students to attend. Some include:

Group events

Saturday, Aug. 19, through Monday, Aug. 21

Students attend required events with Welcome Week groups. Events include Welcome to the Academy, Academic College Meetings, Group Meetings and NDSUbelong.

Group Meeting #1, Dinner and NDSUconnect

Saturday, Aug. 19, 3:30 p.m. to 7:45

Get to know your Welcome Week group members, professional staff and Welcome Week Group Leader. Making connections is a big part of the Welcome Week and NDSU experience. NDSUconnect is an interactive and engaging session facilitated by entrepreneur, national speaker and author, Chad Littlefield, and it will provide strategies for getting beyond small talk to having conversations that matter. This event is required for all incoming students. Check with your Welcome Week group schedule in MyNDSU for more details. 

Saturday Night Live

Saturday, Aug. 19, 7:45 p.m. to 11 p.m., Memorial Union and surrounding area.

Several hands-on experiences and events are scheduled.

Walk Through the University Gates

Monday, Aug. 21, 10:15 a.m. to 11 a.m., corner of 12th Avenue and University Drive

Walk with faculty, staff and other students through the university gates as part of the tradition to celebrate joining the NDSU community.

First Day of School Photos

Tuesday, Aug. 22, 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., Bison statue across from the library.

Share your first day with family and friends. Be sure to stop by the iconic Bison statue to get your first day of school photo done.

Memorial Union Open House

Wednesday, Aug. 23, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., Memorial Union

The Memorial Union is a hub of activity and a great place to hang out and make connections. Check out the variety of activities throughout the day to learn more about all that the Memorial Union has to offer.

Tie Dye

Wednesday, Aug. 23, 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Babbling Brook, west of South Engineering.

Grab a free t-shirt and tie dye it in NDSU colors to show off your Bison Pride.

Block party

Thursday, Aug 24, 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., Bolley Drive loop next to West Dining Center

Capture your memories during a night full of fun. Enjoy snacks, crafts, music, yard games and tons of fun. Students won’t want to miss the celebration.

Farm Animal Fun

Friday, Aug. 25, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Shepperd Arena

NDSU has a rich tradition as an agricultural institution, and this is an opportunity to get to know the animals. The schedule includes equine grooming, bottle feeding dairy calves and looking at ultrasounds of pig and sheep.

Student Involvement Expo

Wednesday, Aug. 30, 11 p.m. to 3 p.m., outside of Memorial Union

Over 200 student organizations and campus departments will be showcased. Find something that interests you by visiting with some of the organizations.

“The knowledge gained and friendships that can begin during Welcome Week will help make the whole college experience better,” Schumann said. “Plus, who doesn't love free fun?”

Fall semester classes begin Monday, Aug. 21, at 4 p.m. The first full day of classes is Tuesday, Aug. 22.
