Wellness Center: ‘There is something for everyone’

SHARE

Students at NDSU can find an activity to stay healthy no matter their interest. On campus, NDSU’s Wallman Wellness Center offers a variety of programs and services that meet everyone's needs.

“The most important aspect we want students to know is that there is something for everyone,” said Jobey Lichtblau, director of the Wellness Center. “We are a comprehensive facility that offers a wide variety of programs for all interests.  We don’t want to be known as a gym because we have so much more to offer.”

The purpose of the Wellness Center is to promote life-long well-being through innovative programs. Staff promote this mission by creating several inclusive programs.

Lichtblau said some of the most popular programs students enjoy include, Floaty Night, the Wellness Center Challenge, Women on Weights, intramurals, personal training, Rock Climbing 101 and the Outdoor Adventure trip to Itasca State Park.

Visit the Wellness Center’s website to check out the full list of programs and services.

In addition to the Wellness Center, there are several recreational activities available to students throughout the Fargo-Moorhead community. Explore one of the 150 parks and enjoy the 105 miles of trails maintained by the Fargo Parks District. There also are several golf and disc golf courses, tennis courts and skate parks in the area.

Equipment rentals, including tents, camping gear, canoes, kayaks and more are available through the Wellness Center. Check out the equipment on the Wellness Center’s Outdoor Adventure page.

What do you enjoy most about the Wellness Center?

What I enjoy most about the Wellness Center is the wide variety of activities they provide for us such as a gym, pool/sauna, MMA studio and rock-climbing wall. I utilize the gym and the pool often and it’s a great way to hang out with friends.

What activities do you enjoy in the community?

I enjoy frolfing in the fall and spring at the courses in the FM area and it’s a great way to have fun for cheap.

What else would you like to mention?

I’d recommend trying a club you don’t know much about, for example I joined the MMA club my freshman year and met some really cool people.

Donald Steininger

Major: Mechanical engineering

Year: Junior

Hometown Brooklyn Park, Minnesota.

What do you enjoy most about the Wellness Center?

I really enjoy the atmosphere of the Wellness Center. I've been going since my freshman year and everything is always so clean and the people are so nice. My favorite thing I use is the weightlifting area and the aquatics for swimming and the sauna.

What would you tell prospective students about the Wellness Center?

If you're into athletics, join a sport or do some intramurals. If you would like to get into fitness overall (through weightlifting or cardio, etc.) talk to somebody, or schedule an appointment with a personal trainer. You can find something at the Wellness Center that catches your interest. I like going at any time of the day, if possible, it gets busy really fast in the evenings.

What activities do you enjoy in the community?

I've gone on walks and runs around campus plenty of times because it has some nice scenery, and going downtown with friends can be really fun.

Major: Criminal justice

Year: Junior

Hometown: Macon, Georgia.

What do you enjoy most about the Wellness Center:?

I like the Wellness Center because of the environment. Everyone is so nice to each other and they like to help others out. I utilize the weight area the most and the upstairs treadmills.

What activities do you enjoy in the community?

I like to golf outside of lifting but that’s not always for everyone. Golf gets you out and about and you can have fun with it as well. Either a competition against yourself or others.

What else would you like to mention?

Something I tell everyone is that if you don’t start now and say you’ll start tomorrow, it’ll never get done. Lifting is a competition against yourself every day to be better than you were yesterday. Even if you show up for at least 30 minutes, three times a week, that’s enough. If it takes time and discipline to break habits, it’ll take time and discipline to create them, too.

Student feedback helps Wellness Center staff determine desired programs and equipment. Lichtblau said feedback is collected through an annual operational survey of students and Wellness Center members. Program participants also are surveyed at the end of each program.

The Wellness Center averages around 28,000 to 30,000 visits each month.
